This year our County legislated a 5 cent charge for all plastic and paper bags at stores. Many other jurisdictions also have this fee to cut down on littering such as LA and Washington DC (which was first).
Although I’ve been bringing bags to the grocery store for about 20 years (my husband’s idea way back), I recently purchased an insulated bag. At first I thought it would be useful in our camper van because it folded flat. But really I liked the design and was trying to justify the purchase.
Since I have to “forage” at several stores to obtain all the food for my family, I realized I could put an ice block in the insulated bag and keep the cold and frozen food safe in the hot vehicle between stops. Many of our older bags are wearing thin, so I needed a new bag anyway.
The result? The bag works extremely well, has lots of room, is comfortable to carry, and is easy to store between shopping trips.
An insulated bag makes sense in the sizzling summer months. Igloo manufactured mine. You can see examples here.
